Literacy Skills

Young girl giving high 5 to her speech pathologist

Reading and spelling are built on spoken-language foundations — particularly phonological awareness and sound knowledge.

If your child is finding reading, spelling or sounding out words harder than expected, a speech pathologist can help.

Signs Parents Often Notice:

  •  Difficulty rhyming, or hearing and playing with sounds in words
  • Trouble sounding out or blending words when reading
  • Mixing up similar-sounding words or letter sounds
  • A teacher has flagged reading or spelling as an area of concern

What's Involved

An assessment looks at your child's phonological awareness and sound-letter knowledge, alongside their broader language skills, since these are closely linked to literacy.

Our speech pathologists develop a targeted therapy program, underpinned by the Sounds-Write program, a structured, evidence-based approach to teaching phonics and sound-letter knowledge. Sessions are structured and sequential, building skills step by step.
