Stuttering
Stuttering - sometimes called a fluency disorder — is common in young children and can range from mild to more noticeable. If you've noticed your child repeating sounds, words or phrases, or getting stuck when trying to speak, a speech pathology assessment can help clarify what's happening and what support looks like.
Signs Parent Often Notice:
- Repeating sounds, syllables, words or phrases (e.g. "I-I-I want that")
- Stretching out sounds ("ssssssnake")
- Getting stuck with no sound coming out, sometimes with visible tension
- Avoiding certain words or situations where talking is required
What's Involved
An assessment looks at the type, frequency and pattern of your child's stuttering, along with family history and any other relevant factors.
Your Speech Pathologist will talk you through the assessment findings and discuss evidence based therapy options suited to your child's age and situation, such the Lidcombe Program (a parent delivered program commonly used with preschool aged children), or speech restructuring approaches, such as the Westmead Program, for school-aged children.
The right approach depends of your child's age, the assessment findings and what will fit into your family's routine and will be determined together.
